My Story

I was always an...artsy child. If you asked me at 6 years old what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said I wanted to be a writer. I think I meant a writer of stories, because that was the only kind of writing I knew at that age!

Even though I knew I wanted to a writer so young, my path has not been a direct one. I dropped that dream for almost a few decades before returning to it.

I started writing poems when I was 9 years old. I had a lot of feelings and writing helped me express them. By high school, I carried a journal with me at all times and wrote my thoughts and poems in it every day.

I was not a student of creative writing growing up. I was a student of classical music. I began taking piano lessons when I was 5 years old and continued on until I was 18. I attended an arts magnet school in high school where I focused on piano performance.

Unfortunately, I spent most of my adult life not doing anything creative. I knew I was a creative person, but I wouldn't be able to prove it to anyone because I was creatively dormant for 10-15 years.

But then I started asking the question "what's stopping me?"

What's stopping me from workshopping my poetry? What's stopping me from reading at an open mic? What's stopping me from getting my poetry published in a journal? And finally, what's stopping me from publishing a collection of poetry?

Once I removed these blockages, I was able to flow and create and go places I never thought I could.
